Arkhangelsk is a big scientific and industrial center in the Northwest of Russia. It is located in the mouth of the North Dvina River. According to the last census the population of the city was 375,000. The main industries found here are machine-building, woodworking, wood chemical, pulp-and-paper, fishery and microbiology. Wood, paper, cardboard, pulp and fish remain the main trade items supplied from Arkhangelsk to other regions of Russia and abroad. The climate here is determined by proximity to the Arctic seas. The winter is usually long (up to 250 days) and cold with the average temperature to minus 26oC. The average summer temperature is about 15oC. |
